Since Dhaka is not a big city in terms of its surface area, it is very easy to use taxi, private car, rickshaw, bus and similar means of transportation in urban transportation or for travelling to the airport from the city center.
The names of the four main bus terminals in the city; Sayedabad bus terminal, Gulistan bus terminal, Gabtoli bus terminal and Mohakhali bus terminal. From these four terminals, there are direct bus services going to the airport. It is very cheap to use buses for travelling to the airport. It is only 5 Taka to take advantage of Dhaka buses. The most popular means of transportation in Dhaka, where more than 400.000 rickshaws offer transportation service, are rickshaws also called three-wheeled taxis. They are divided into two as auto-rickshaw and cycle-rickshaw. The three-wheeled taxis called cycle-rickshaw are generally used for sightseeing just like bicycles. Auto-rickshaws are much faster than the other and much cheaper than normal taxis.
You need to pay 30-50 Taka for travelling with cycle-rickshaw for 15 minutes. The auto-rickshaws run by the CNG company also work with taximeter and the fares start from 25 Taka. It is both practical and enjoyable to travel to Hazrat Shahjalal Airport from the city center by using an auto-rickshaw. Tempo-rickshaws also offer transportation service and they are bigger than auto-rickshaws.
There are two types of taxis offering service in Dhaka and they have different fares. These are black and yellow taxis. The black taxis open their taximeters from 25 Taka. The yellow taxis are almost twice as expensive. With the taxi that you can get on in the city, you can get to Hazrat Shahjalal Airport in about 25-30 minutes. If you have an international driver’s license, you can rent a car by paying 3000 Taka for half-day use; you need to pay about 4500 Taka for full day use. Make sure you make a deal about the price with the driver before boarding the taxi. Taxi drivers in the city can charge high fares especially from foreign tourists. Before you come to the country or at the airport you will be able to make your business much easier by exchanging your money into the Somali Shilling, the currency of the country.
You can reach the center of the city and other cities in the country by renting a car after landing to the Aden Adde International Airport, which connects the capital of Somalia to different points of the world such as Istanbul, Dubai and Nairobi. Renting a car in the city is one of the best alternatives, especially in an environment where it is not advisable to use public transport for safety reasons. Once you are at the airport, you can easily rent your vehicle and take the way. However, it is not recommended to travel alone in the country for security reasons. If you are planning to rent a car in Mogadishu and travel to other settlements both in and around the city, be sure to have a local guide with you.
Once you reach the city center from the airport, you can continue by bus. In Mogadishu, buses are often preferred by local people. That's why it's almost always crowded. This prevents buses from being considered as one of the most comfortable and safe vehicles in the city. Especially if you have cash or valuables on you, avoiding buses is very useful. Nevertheless, if you use your preference on the buses, make sure that you have a local guide or a person who knows the city well with you. You can pay for the buses in cash, but make sure you get the currency shilling. In this case, you can complete your journey at much more affordable prices than currencies like dollars or euros.
In the city you can also get a private car from the airport to Mogadishu city center. Private vehicles are usually used by the residents of the city and they take the guests from the terminal to the city center. If you are going to use the car, you can be in the center of the city in about 20 minutes after you leave Mogadishu Airport and follow the city center signposts. The airport also has pausing, waiting and parking areas reserved for those arriving by private vehicle. You have a chance to leave your car in these parking lots for a few hours or a few days. However, remember that parking fees are not very low, especially if you pay after 3 days. If you want to get a private car between the airport and the city center, obtaining a navigation device would be lifesaving. If you are going to drive the car yourself, remember that you should not travel alone as a safety precaution.
