The Piat Shambhata Freshwater Festival held in June and the Aggao Nac Cagayan Festival held in July are two of the city's most important events. It is believed that these events add a very different atmosphere to the city. Cagayan De Sulu cuisine is based mainly on rice, fish and shellfish. Cooking techniques carry traditional features. Steaming and boiling are among the traditional methods of cooking which are still frequently preferred. Foods cooked using banana leaf form a natural and highly attractive odor. Malaysian, Indonesian, Chinese and Indian cuisines are also frequented throughout the city. Notre Dame of Cagayan, Mindanao State University and Tawi-Tawi Academy are among the most important educational institutions located in the city center. Every year many students come to Cagayan de Sulu to study in these schools. Because Tuguegarao Airport is located close to the center of the city, it is often preferred for transportation.
