Surat, which is located in the southeast of the Gujarat state in the west-central of India, is situated near the Gulf of Cambay and Tapti River. The city is believed to have been founded by a Brahman named Gopi in 1516 who named the area Surajpur or Suryapur. Surat became the name of the city in 1520 and it became the major trade center of India thanks to its textile industry and gold export as well as its cottons, silks and brocades.
