Skofja Loka, which was established between Poljanska Sora and Selska Sora rivers and dates back to the year of 973, consists of the upper city square located under the Skofja Loka Castle, Plac and the lower city square named Lontrg. The town was protected by high walls from the 14th to the late 18th century, and some of those walls are still standing today. In spite of earthquakes, sieges and wars, Skofja Loka is still one of the best preserved medieval cities within Slovenia. Skofja Loka is located only 23 kilometers far from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and it is a popular destination that is highly attractive for many tourists.
Loka Castle, which dates back to the 13th century and overlooks a grassy hill in the west of Mestni, maintains its characteristic architecture, although it was widely renewed after the earthquake in 1511. It is also home to the Loka Museum, which has 20 exhibitions ranging from taxed animals to church frescoes, through its local painters, lace-making traditions and World War II partisans. You can visit the castle to know better the history of Skofja Loka, and you can have a good time both inside and around the castle. In the garden, you can also visit a traditional peasant house from Puštal dating back to the 16th century. Do not forget to see the four magnificent golden altars in the Castle church that dates back to the 17th century and was taken from a ruined church in Dragogoe during the Second World War, which is located northwest of Škofja Loka.
The town is known as 'Colored Loka' thanks to the houses located in the main square dating back to the 16th century in pastel color, and the most impressive house of the town is the Homan House, which survived from 1511 to the present day. Another building that should be noted is the old Town Hall thanks to its three-storey Gothic courtyard and 17th-century frescoes on its facade. Further south is the 17th-century Martin House, which leans on a section of the Old City wall. You can spare just half a day to visit these three houses. The tiny Capuchin Bridge (Stone Bridge) originating from the Capuchin Monastery is one of the symbols of the city and a magnificent structure that has survived from the 14th century to the present. Do not forget to take photos on the bridge to remember those moments!
The Church of the Annunciation, which is located in the village of Crngrob and 4 kilometers north of Škofja Loka, has one of the most valuable frescoes of Slovenia. You should definitely visit this 19th century fresco located on the outer wall near the entrance of the church. This fresco, which is called as the Sacred Market (Sveta Nedelja) and was produced in 1460, etells us what Christians did on Sunday (pray, go to church, help patients) and what they did not (gambling, drinking or fighting). The 18th-century Capuchin Monastery has a priceless library consisting of medieval manuscripts dating from about the year of 1720. These extremely valuable buildings for history lovers should be on your list of places to see. Within the scope of the Pisana Loka Festival that means colorful Loka, music, theater, movie screenings and children's events are organized during 10 days at the end of August. If you travel to this place during this period, you can participate in events organized in various city squares and castles.
Although it is highly expensive, in Skofja Loka, where you will find the traditional cuisine of Slovenia, you can taste the soups made from beef or chicken as a starter. Noodle and meat dishes are also essentials flavors in the kitchen. However, there are also delicious dishes for vegans where they can eat vegetables. The best time to travel to Skofja Loka is the summer season between May and September.
