Hongqiao International Airport, which started offering service in 1907 as a military base in the Changning district of Shanghai, the locomotive of the Chinese economy significantly developing in the last quarter century, has been home to flights for a long time. The airport, which took its name from Hongqiao, a small Chinese town, was renewed in 2010 with an aim to keep up with the conditions of the era. Hongqiao International Airport offers service to nearly 40 million passengers each year with its two large terminal buildings.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is located 13 km from the city center, in the Changning district, and handled about 40 million passengers in 2014. The airport is the city’s main domestic airport, serving few international flights to nearby areas.  

Rail

The Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is located right next to Terminal 2 at the airport. The station features 2 major lines that run through it, connecting the city with the airport in a very convenient way. Passengers who want to get to the city center from the airport by train need to take Line 2 or Line 10, which take about 19 to 22 minutes to get to the city center.

Airport Bus

Due to its close proximity to the city center accessing Hongqiao Airport by road is very convenient, except during rush hour. To get to the city center from the airport you can use bus line 941 during the day. Bus line 941 provides transportation to the central train station. If you land at night you have to use night bus 316 to get to the city center.

Taxi

The airport is located 13 km from People’s Square in the city center. Therefore most passengers prefer to take a taxi from the airport to the city. The total time can vary depending on the traffic but on average it takes about 30 minutes to get to the city center. Taxis are located by exit number 4 at Terminal 2.  

Rental Car

The fact that the airport is located in such close proximity to the city center and many other areas makes renting a car an attractive alternative. The rental car offices are located in Terminal 2. To get to the city from the airport go south on Hongyu Road and connect to the G50 Expressway, which goes east. This will connect you to the Yan’an Road, which goes directly to the People’s Square, passing by Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Times Square.

Bus

Buses are not a preferred method of transportation due to the heavy traffic in the city. However there are various bus lines that provide transportation to the airport from the city center. Taxi

Taxis are not the most preferred method of transportation to get to the airport from the city center due to the heavy traffic in the city. Nevertheless, you can easily find a taxi in the city’s commerce, arts, culture, and residential areas. Despite being located in close proximity to the city center, taking a cab to the airport can take 30 minutes because of traffic.

Car

To get from the city center or trade center to the airport by car you have to take the Yan’an Road, which is a major road that goes through the center of the city, to the G50 Expressway. This will connect to the Hongyu Road, which connects to the airport. There are 3 different parking lots at the airport that have a combined capacity of 800 vehicles.  

Airport Information

Located 13 km from the city center, Hongqiao International Airport was the first civilian airport in the city. However today the airport mainly serves domestic flights. The airport consists of two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2; the second terminal was built in 2010 to support the Shanghai Expo. There are free shuttle buses that provide inter-terminal transportation. The airport contains many restaurants and shops that cater to the Asian demographic. There are also world-famous restaurant chains as well as a large duty free shop and event spaces located at the airport.
