About Port Said
Being one of the two port cities located on the Mediterrenean entrance of Suez Canal in Egypt, Port Said is also one of the major cities of tourism and industry in the country. The city, which is second in the country in terms of human development, is also the only metropolitan city located on two continents, apart from Istanbul.
Port Said is built around the Suez Canal, which is used by hundreds of vessels each year. Although the city does not have much historical character as it was founded in 1856, its beaches extending over 30 kilometers make the city one of the major tourism centers of the country. In the city, there is also a 56 meters high lighthouse built in the late 1800s.
Another interesting fact about Port Said is that the Statue of Liberty in USA was actually made for this city. Vessels that will or did use Suez Canal visit this city, which is in a quite advanced position on chemical products, cigarettes, processed food and textile raw material, for refuelling. It is also the port where goods produced in the country are exported the world. The city has one airport, located 7 kilometers away from the city centre, on the Mediterrenean coast.
