There are 55 villages and 6 towns in Midyat, one of the ten districts of Mardin. The district is located next to Mardin-Cizre road and it is 58 kilometers of the city center of Mardin. On the Assyrian tablets from 9th century BC, the name of the district is seen as “Matiate” that means “cave town” and the district became the home of many different civilizations. Having flatlands, Midyat has poor vegetation cover that consists of moorland. Due to this situation of land, people in the district prefer raising livestock instead of agricultural activities for wheat, lentil, chickpea, barley and grape. Another well-known economic activity in the district is silver embroidery, called as filigree art, of which craftsmen can be met in the district’s bazaar. Summers are hot and dry, winters are warm in Midyat. An historical part of the district, which is called as “old city” and was built by Assyrians, consists of stone buildings with different architecture and the new part of the city is approximately 3 kilometers of the old city. Historical places are everywhere in the district and any visitor should see the oldest Assyrian Orthodox sanctuary named as Mor Gabriel Monastery that was built in 397, Church of the Virgin Mary from the year 1860 in Anıtlı village and Cevat Pasha Mosque which was built in 1915 with Midyat stone. You can also see remains from ancient history in the Midyat City Museum.
Located 20 kilometers of Mardin city center, Mardin Airport is 78 kilometers of Midyat. You can reach Mardin Airport by taxis, minibuses and hotel shuttle services.
