About Madeira

Madeira, which is the largest member of the Madeira Archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean, is an autonomous island located in Portugal. The island is also known as the Pearl of the Atlantic, the Green Island and the Floating Forest.

The island of volcanic eruption origin has an impressive natural beauty with its Pico Ruivo, which is the highest peak of the island with a height of 1800 meters, green vegetation, secret bays and deep blue waters where whales swim. Two thirds of the island are in the status of natural park under protection. It is estimated that the Laurissilva Forest on the island has a history of twenty million years.

The effects of the semi-tropical climate are observed in Madeira. Although April is the month receiving the highest amount of rainfall, the weather is rainy all year long. In April and May, the island becomes more beautiful when the flowers bloom. Madeira's rainy climate and mountainous structure as well as the lack of long and wide beaches affect the development of sea tourism, but it is one of the most valuable places for nature lovers.

There is a cable car in Santana Village which is attractive with its traditional thatched roof houses. This cable car offers fantastic views and is loved by tourists. Cabo Girao, which is one of the highest sea cliffs of the world with a height of approximately 600 meters, is one of the most important places to visit. The skywalk that is made of transparent glass offers stunning views for the visitors. This skywalk can be scary for some visitors but walking on it will be an unforgettable experience for Madeira visitors who love adrenalin. Monte Place Tropical Garden located on a very wide area, Funchal Botanical Garden, Sao Vicente Caves where you can the real lava channels and Jardim Orchid Garden with its surprising diversity are among the places to visit. For more information about the history and culture of Madeira, you can visit the Madeira Story Center. Walking, climbing, diving, sailing, canoeing, golf, cycling and surfing are among the nature sports to do in Madeira. Funchal is the area where the nightlife of the island is lively.

Madeira is very assertive about seafood. Camara de Lobos, which is a fishing village, is a very suitable location for trying fresh fish types. You can try any fish you want in one of the restaurants in Camara de Lobos.  If you consume alcohol, you should try poncha which is the local drink of the island.
