Inverness, located in the Scottish Highlands, is the administrative centre for the Highland council area and is considered the capital of the Highlands of Scotland. Located in the heart of the region, Inverness is the junction point of major roads.
It is estimated that the first settlements in Inverness date back to the Picts tribe. The castle in Shakespeare’s play Macbeth was located in the city. Inverness has been home to a variety of civilizations throughout history; today it is a popular city that attracts visitors from many parts of Scotland.
Inverness is located about 260 km from Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The city had a population of almost 60 thousand in 2012. Inverness is known to be one of the fastest growing cities in both the UK and Europe. The most important reason for this is the ever-increasing migration from the surrounding cities and towns.
The Caledonian Canal runs through the city, connecting it to the Scottish west coast at Corpach, near Fort William. The canal has revitalized the city and its surroundings, offering tourists a variety of activities on and around it.
Inverness usually experiences cool weather year-round. In the winter months the temperature drops below zero and occasionally falls as low as -20 degrees. In the summer months the weather is much more mild, with average temperatures ranging between 20 and 24 degrees.
