With a population approaching nine million, Ho Chi Minh is the largest city in Vietnam and is also the heart of the country’s economy. The city receives its name Ho Chi Minh after one of the former leaders of the country, and was the capital of South Vietnam until 1975.
Ho Chi Minh has a tropical climate. Between the months May and October, it is a rainy season, therefore, it is not a good time to visit the city. You can just as easily rent a car and surely you will be given a driver who speaks English to assist you. However, you should consider the costs before making such decision. Be sure to try the local dishes made with vegetables and seafood, noodles, and tropical fruits.
You can find many night clubs, bars, discos and bistros in the 1st and 3rd areas of the city and the Pham Ngu Lao area. The ideal places for shopping are the street markets which can be found in almost every street. Suitable gift items with suitable prices can be bought in these markets. Accessories made with bamboo and clothes made of silk are some of the common attractions.
Places such as the Cu Chi Tunnels, Reunification Palace (formerly known as the Independence Palace), Musem of War History, Vietnam History Museum, Ho Chi Minh Museum provide information on the history of the city. If you want to get involved with the local culture through an artistic approach, you can watch shows like ‘O Show’, ‘Teh Dar’ or ‘The Mist’.
By visiting the Buddha Temples, the Central Mosque and the Cathedral of Notre Dame, you can get an understanding of the city’s respect and appreciation of its’ religions. The Saigon Opera House, the Bitexco Finance Tower, the Central Post Office and the Skydeck are some of the places worth seeing in Ho Chi Minh.
