About Genk

Genk, where the Celts lived in Ancient Times, turned into one of the religious centers of Christianity after the 10th century. Located in the province of Limburg in Belgium today, the town led the Western industrialization at the beginning of the 19th century. Coal mines discovered here at the beginning of the 20th century laid the ground for development and foreign migration. Almost half of the population in Genk, which is a cosmopolitan town and has a population of about 65 thousand, consists of immigrants.

Remnants from the 19th century are exhibited in Bokrijk Open Air Museum, where the history of the town is kept alive. The coal mining areas in Zwartberg, Waterschei and Winterslag are visited extensively by the visitors. Museum Emile Van Doren, where the historical heritage of the country and the town is exhibited, Hoge Kempen National Park which opened in 2006 and Europlanetarium that is used as an observatory are the other tourist attractions of Genk.
