The airport was built in the city of Gan in the 1950s, when the Maldives was a British colony. Seenu Airport was used for many years by the British Royal Force. In the early 2000s the international terminal of the airport was completely renewed, as the terminal was inadequate with the Maldives becoming an important tourism attraction in world.

Gan Island is located on Addu Atoll, in the south of Maldives, and it is the second largest island of Atoll. However, it has a population of about 1,100 people. The island is also home to the only international airport of Atoll and has wonderful beaches and natural beauties.

It is also possible to reach the other islands by speedboats located in the city. Taxi is also one of the most commonly used means of transportation in the city center. There are buses as means of public transportation. These also provide urban transportation. These buses can also be used to get to the other islands.

Gan International Airport is just 1 kilometer of the city center. You can reach the city center by bus. If you do not prefer public transportation, you can rent a car at the airport by visiting one of the car rental companies. Taxi is one of the most preferred means of transportation. On the island where there are many accommodation centers, transportation service is provided to the guests with private services. The transportation to the airport by taxi takes about 26 minutes from Hithadhoo Island, 15 minutes from Maradhoo Island, 7 minutes from Feydhoo Island and only 4 minutes from the city center of Gan Island.
