About El Oued

El Oued city in the Democratic People's Republic of Algeria, the largest country in North Africa, is a city with a population of about 630 thousand, of which the majority is Muslim. El Oued, a desert town east of Algeria, takes its water source from the underground river. Palm cultivation is developed in the city, where the houses are made of bricks. The city is also known as “The City of Domes” because the roofs of the buildings are dome-like. Located near the Tunisian border and 640 kilometers east of the Algerian capital, the city is experiencing a desert climate.

The summers are very hot and the winters are mild. In the desert climate where rainfall is rarely seen, the summers are quite dry. The city's N16 highway connects El Oued to Touggort in the southwest and Tebessa in the north. The N48 highway connects El Oued to the northern city of Still. About 20 kilometers south of El Oued is Guemar Airport. While the education level of the urban population is not very high, 7% of the population seems to have completed higher education and 17% have completed secondary education. The overall literacy rate is 80%, 91% of the males and 80% of the females are literate.
