About Darwaz
Darwaz, one of the settlements of Afghanistan's Badakhshan Province, is located at the northeastern end of the country on the border of Tajikistan. The city, which has a population of around twenty thousand, is seen as a scattered settlement of interally closed tribes and groups. The rugged, mountainous terrain of the area is probably the biggest contributing factor to this social structure.
A continental climate is present in Darwz. Winters are especially hard, cold and rainy. Agriculture and livestock are the main source of people's livelihood. Although it has quite natural conditions suitable for activities such as mountain climbing, rafting, trekking, ecotourism and winter sports, tourism is not very developed in Darwaz. Visitors to the city can do various nature sports only with their own facilities and equipment.
