About Carlow

Carlow is to the east of Ireland, around 9 km from Dublin, and is a lush green, peaceful town on the banks of the River Barrow. Carlow has a temperate climate with summer averages of 15-16 degrees and averages of 5-6 degrees in the winter. There’s plenty of rainfall all year round.

Brownshill Dolmen, a megalithic portal tomb that dates back to 3000 B.C, is located just 3km from Carlow and is a definite stop for anyone interested in history.  Also of historic interest, Carlow Castle, built in the 13th century, is one of the most important places for the town heritage. Another place that's worthy of a visit is the Duckett family mansion, which was built in the 1800s and later abandoned. It’s now a ruin with beautiful surrounding grounds. Nature lovers can also include places such as Milford Mills and Oak Park in their itinerary.  The Carlow Courthouse, with underground cells and dungeons, is also an interesting place to visit. A must-see for those interested in architecture is Carlow Cathedral. The Freedom Tree sculpture, erected in the memory of the 640 Irish men killed in 1798, is considered as one of the symbols for Carlow. Tullow Street is the heart of Carlow and a great place to do some shopping. There are also some nice cafes and restaurants in this area. If you like going to museums then you can visit the Carlow County Museum and the County Carlow Military Museum.
