Bardejov, one of the most beautiful and oldest Slovak cities with its history and culture, is located in the eastern part of the country, near the Polish border. The buildings and historical center that forms the Jewish suburb since 18th century in Bardejov, which is called as ‘the most gothic city of Slovakia’, have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000.
Bardejov is remembered as a market settlement in 1241 according to the history pages and it became one of the most important cities of the Kingdom of Hungary in the 15th century. The historical monuments from the past to the present are protected under the roof of ‘City Monuments Reserve’. While the city center consists of a number of historical buildings, the Burgher-type architecture is one of the most remarkable features. In the center of the square, there is the Town Hall, which was built in the 16th century and now serves as a museum. The most impressive work of the square, which is described as a magnificent structure, is the Roman Catholic Basilica of St. Egidius. This Gothic-style work is home to some of the finest examples of wood carvings bearing the traces from the 15th and 16th centuries. You can watch the unique view of Bardejov with a bird's eye view from the tower of the Basilica. The Franciscan Monastery in the city is also one of the historical treasures, located right next to the medieval walls of Slovakia. Another remarkable feature of Bardejov, which is the best preserved medieval city in the region, is the baths that are known throughout all Europe. Spring waters are known for their healing effect, which has been good for many discomforts since the Middle Ages. There are natural spas on the southeastern slopes of the Flysch Mountain, where you can enjoy the natural therapy of water in a quiet valley. Every year, thousands of tourists come here to see the historical atmosphere of the city and the healing power of the spa.
The nearest airport to visit this beautiful city of Slovakia is Kosice International Airport. The center of Bardejov is 90 kilometers from the airport and you can come to the city center easily by renting a car or taking a taxi.
