Anadyr is the administrative center of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug region, located in northeast Russia. The town is located at the mouth of the Anadyr River, where it flows into the Gulf of Anadyr. It is an important stop on the strategic sea route at the north end of the country. The small port town of Anadyr acts as a bridge linking the ports in Far Eastern Russia with the Bering Sea. Established by Russian maritime explorer Semyon Dezhnev in 1889, the settlement was first called ‘Yukaghir’ and was named ‘Anadyr’ in 1923. Located in close proximity to the northern polar circle, Anadyr is covered in snow for a large part of the year, similar to the nearby Eskimo settlements. The buildings in the city are vibrantly painted to contract the snow. This colorful vista earned Anadyr the nickname of ‘summer’ city’.

Among the city’s major sights are St. Trinity Cathedral, the statue of St. Nikolai, Chukotka Memorial, and Chukotka Museum. Activities to enjoy in the city include dog sledding in the winter and trekking, hiking, rafting, and fishing in the summer. You can also visit nearby Eskimo villages. The sub-arctic climate means winters are long and very cold while summers are cool and short. The Ugolny Airport is located 11 km east of the city.
