Chihuahua, which is the capital of the State of Chihuahua, the biggest state of Mexico, is located within the USA border of the country. The city, which is located in the north of Mexico, is very developed industrially. The name of the city means “between two waters” in Aztec language. Chihuahua was founded in 1709 by two Spanish explorers and it became famous as a rich mine center in the colonial period. Miguel Hidalgo, who was the leader of the Mexican War of Independence, revolted against the Spanish colonialism on September 16, 1810. He was held prisoner in Chihuahua and executed on the main square of the city where there is today a monument of him. September 16 is celebrated as the “Independence Day” in Mexico. The eye-catching architectural texture of the city consists of the building from the colonial period. However, many colonial structures were demolished during the street expansion works in 1970s. The buildings which succeeded in surviving continue their existence magnificently. Chihuahua is home to an urban legend which earned reputation in the world.
The legend is about a dead model with a wedding dress. The model was placed in a window of a bridal shop in 1930 and is still in the window. It is believed that she died on her wedding day and was mummified and placed in the window by the shop-owner. She was the daughter of the shop owner. This legend still remains a mystery. San Francisco Temple is the symbolic architectural structure of the city. Some of the other tourist attractions are Chihuahua Federal Palace, El Palomar Central Park, Mansion Creel, Chihuahua Cathedral, Casa Redonda Art Museum, Historical State House and Pancho Villa Museum. The city, which is under the influence of the steppe climate, receives low rainfall throughout the year. General Fierro Villa Airport is located 18 kilometers of the city center.
