About Capri

Capri is the touristic island on the Sorrento Peninsula of Italy's Mediterranean coast and it lies to the south of the Gulf of Naples. The island, where thousands of years of historical and natural beauties are preserved, consists of two settlements, Capri and Anacapri. The settlement of Capri is home to cottage houses and luxurious shopping spots, while Anacapri settlement is the area where the inhabitants of the island live. Capri's being a holiday resort island is as far back as the Roman Empire. It was used by the emperor, his family, and other nobility as a summer resort and an entertainment and recreation center. Especially the Roman Emperor Tiberius built a number of empire villas here.  The remains of the villas still maintain their existence today. There are two common rumors about the name of the island. The first one of these is 'cacpreae' which is defined as 'goat' in Latin and the second is 'capros' that means 'wild boar' in Greek.

Capri, which has become one of the most popular holiday resorts in Europe since the 19th century, is also known as the island where the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorki was exiled to. Gorki's house, which is located in Via Krupp, the most famous street of the island today, is used as a hotel and cherishes the memory of the author. Capri Island, known for its sandals, ceramics, lemons and limoncello beverage, has two separate ports called Marina Piccola and Marina Grande. Marina Grande is the port which provides mostly transportation to the island. The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), which once became the symbol of Capri and was used by imperial members as bathing places, Faraglioni the famous limestone cliffs of the island, Tragara Belvedere the panoramic walking trail, the remains of the imperial villas and the Gardens of Augustus are the top priority sightseeing spots in Capri. In addition, Villa San Michele, built in 1896 and consisting of 12 Roman villas, and Villa Jovis where Emperor Tiberius lived are very attractive to the tourists. Capri is hot and it is influenced by the temperate climate. Transportation to Capri is mostly provided by ferries departing from Naples.
