Bayreuth is associated with 4 important figures that have contributed to the city’s culture; Markgrafen Wilhelmine, the architect of important Baroque structures, poet and novelist Jean Paul, Richard Wagner, who has become immortalized through his work, and finally the first pop star of music history pianist Franz Liszt, who created buzz all throughout Europe. Every year a festival dedicated to Wagner’s operas is held in the city. The festival takes place in August and attracts fans from all over the world. Festival tickets are usually bought months in advance.
Due to its proximity to Nuremberg, Bayreuth was extensively bombed during World War II and many historic buildings were destroyed. However, the city is rebuilding its historic and important structures, such as Richard Wagner’s villa, Wahnfried, and the Margravial Opera House.
